Log vs. Timber

A math student is pestered by a classmate who wants to copy his homework assignment. The student hesitates, not only because he thinks it's wrong, but also because he doesn't want to be sanctioned for aiding and abetting.

His classmate calms him down: "Nobody will be able to trace my homework to you: I'll be changing the names of all the constants and variables: a to b, x to y, and so on."

Not quite convinced, but eager to be left alone, the student hands his completed assignment to the classmate for copying.

After the deadline, the student asks: "Did you really change the names of all the variables?"

"Sure!" the classmate replies. "When you called a function f, I called it g; when you called a variable x, I renamed it to y; and when you were writing about the log of x+1, I called it the timber of x+1..."

Tutoring Makes a Difference!

As a tutor and educator in Florida, I have seen many parents and even students addressing the fact that they may not enter into the next grade. This can be a scary time for many parents. On that scary note, there are options available to improve a child's educational outlook. Being a math tutor in the Broward County area I have seen many success stories through tutoring with Tutorwell.com. One particular student that I have tutored will always stand out. She first started as a 10th grader with no knowledge of basic multiplication facts. Each session both the student and I put out the time needed to make this a success story. Although I was tough on her, she saw past it and paid attention because she knew it was her future she was playing with. Within 4-6 sessions she made a huge improvement. She started adding and subtracting without using her fingers and her multiplication tables was coming along smoothly. Her parents were serious about her receiving an education. They would drill her to make sure she knew what she was doing. Within 2-3 months of tutoring, the student was already at a sixth grade level. From starting at a low level at math she worked her way up to the higher level. A few sessions from then we started to incorporate algebra material. To my surprise, she picked up all very easily. Anytime tests were given in school she would be the first to say she understood most if not all the material. Although this student of mine still has a way to go, this particular case has proven that one on one tutoring does work. At the end, she felt confident she was going onto the next grade level. Not only does tutoring help with academic but it also assists with building the confidence level that children need to succeed.
